Furthering his studies, Thomas moved to New York City to attend Manhattan School of Music for a Master of Music in Classical Trumpet where he studied with Thomas V. Smith of the New York Philharmonic. While at MSM, he was active in all major classical performing groups ranging from Opera to Symphony, again occupying principal positions. During his studies, Thomas has been afforded the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in classical music and pedagogy - from the best in Brass to the top performing conductors in today’s major orchestras.
Once discovering a passion in both performance and education, Thomas moved ‘across the river’ to earn a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, studying with Kevin Cobb of The Juilliard School & American Brass Quintet. While serving as a Teaching Assistant in the Brass Department, he specializes in Solo & Chamber Work with aspirations to teach at the collegiate level. Previously, Thomas has worked closely and participated in master classes with coaches Mark Gould, Toby Hanks, Per Brevig, Robert Sullivan, David Krauss, and William Fielder, among many others.
As a perfomer, Thomas most recently performed with The Riverside Choral Society and The Orchestra at St. Luke’s in the newly renovated Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City as well as many area ensembles in both New York and New Jersey. He is a regular member of The New Amsterdam Brass Band, an all-star group that features top musicians from New York to Philadelphia, most recently performing with soloists Matthew Muckey of the New York Philharmonic and trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzutti.
As a teacher, Thomas has run a successful trumpet studio for over 12 years. Many former students have been accepted at major universities in the United States, many with full scholarships. To contact Tom for lessons, visit the TB Trumpet Studio page.
